Singapore, September 18, 2000 -- ROOTS Communications today announced a clinched deal between its wholly-owned subsidiary in China, ROOTS Communication Equipment (Beijing) Company Limited, and China Unicom, to expand Unicom's SMSC in Zhejiang Province, China.
According to the latest deal, Unicom will purchase approximately RMB 6.4 million (US$ 0.77 million) of equipment from ROOTS Communication Equipment (Beijing) Co., Ltd to facilitate the expansion of its current SMS systems and enhance its messaging services. In addition to two multi-million-dollar deals signed between the two companies last year, the new contract brings the total contracted value of agreement to approximately RMB 25.5 million (US$ 3.1 million).

'' China Unicom signed two contracts with ROOTS Communications last July to purchase RMB 19.1 million (US$ 2. 3 million) worth of GSM voice mail system and SMSC from ROOTS Communication Equipment (Beijing) Co.,Ltd, to expand its network capacity and provide a host of value-added voice messaging and Chinese-language short message services to its GSM subscribers in Zhejiang.
Installation of the systems offered subscribers more message storage space and more customised service options, including database access, billing inquiry/reminder, message broadcast, mobile information on demand and email alert. The GSM voice mail system has a designed capacity for 120,000 users.
