ROOTS and Glenayre Join Hands for Unified Messaging Solutions

Singapore (June 18, 2001) – ROOTS Communications , a leading provider of telecommunications solutions, and Glenayre Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: GEMS), a leader in unified communications solutions, today announced a co-operation agreement to develop solutions for the unified messaging systems (UMS) market. Under the agreement, ROOTS will utilize Glenayre's OpenUMS application programming interfaces (API) to develop value-added end-user applications for compatibility with Glenayre's @ctiveMessaging portfolio.

Glenayre is the first company to allow access to its Unified Messaging Services (UMS) platform by offering an API for third-party developers to build applications such as voice portal services, Internet content, Personal Information Management, address book management and Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) applications. By allowing for third-party development on the UMS platform, Glenayre can quickly develop new services and build unique solutions to target any market. This is especially valuable worldwide where there is constant need to integrate customized Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) and different languages for text-to-speech and voice activation services.

“Glenayre's OpenUMS API provides a leading-edge platform for ROOTS's research and development team to create innovative UMS solutions,” said Koh Nai Lip, Vice President and General Manager for ROOTS Communications . “We look forward to collaborating with Glenayre and developing convenient message management tools.”

“For unified communications solutions to become intuitive and ubiquitous requires global multi-corporation collaboration,” explained Joellyn Sargent, Vice President of Marketing Communications for Glenayre. “Glenayre is pleased to collaborate with local partners such as ROOTS, who will quickly develop new services that target specific market segments such as different region-specific languages for text-to-speech and Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) that meet the specific needs of a geography or country.”

Glenayre's Unified Messaging Services (UMS) platform, part of the company's Enhanced Services Platform line of products, allows service providers to offer subscribers an easy way to manage their voice, e-mail and fax messages through an Internet-based graphical interface. Utilizing the UMS platform also allows service providers to offer an array of other value-added services such as integrated short messaging services that allow subscribers to send and receive short messages through their mobile, interactive devices; voice activated services, which allow subscribers to place calls and navigate their voice mailbox utilizing voice commands; and Constant Touch service which allows subscribers to consolidate their telephone, cellular, pager and other numbers into one convenient telephone number so they can be reached any time, anywhere.

The Glenayre @ctiveMessaging portfolio—comprised of the @ctiveMessaging Large Solution platform and @ctiveVision Unified Messaging platform bridges wireless, wireline and Internet-protocol networks to unify messaging technologies simplify communications. An array of enhanced services, from messaging platforms to unified communications provides service providers the flexibility to grow their business with the security of collaborating with an industry-recognized communications leader.

The @ctiveMessaging platform combines the advantages of a modular, distributed architecture with the efficiencies of a common database and centralized SS7 administration and new services deployment. It is designed to provide central office grade network reliability, and allows carriers to support from 500,000 up to 5 million subscribers and 6,000 ports on our Large Solution platform. The system consolidates voice and fax, and integrates with the @ctiveVision Unified Messaging platform to provide text and unified messaging on a scalable platform with one of the broadest portfolios of deployable user applications available today. This includes easy to manage voice, email and fax messages that are accessible through a graphical user interface, and voice activated services that allow subscribers to use voice commands to place calls and navigate their voice mailbox.

The premier solution in Glenayre's enhanced services portfolio, the @ctiveVision platform, significantly simplifies communications by allowing users to manage their voice mail, e-mail, fax and alphanumeric test messages from multiple devices through a single, unified mailbox. Subscribers can view this mailbox using a web interface or any wireless WAP and USSD-compatible handset, and they can manage their messages with voice-activated services (VAS), through a web, WAP or USSD interface or any ordinary telephone (DTMF). As Glenayre continues to develop new offerings, @ctiveVision will become the portal through which future Glenayre unified communications services will be delivered. Carriers who install the @ctiveVision system now will have the advantage of being ready for 2G and 3G offerings well ahead of their competitors.
