CASE STUDIES

Customer
Pokka Corporation ( Singapore ) Limited is a leading brand in the Asia Pacific with subsidiaries in Singapore and Hong Kong and a significant interest in a contract manufacturer in Malaysia. Established as Pokka Japan 's Asian flagship in 1977, the company was listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange in 1994. The Group's principal activities are the production and sales of beverages primarily under the Pokka trademark, and operating restaurants.

The Objective and Challenge
Pokka Corporation (Singapore) Ltd wanted to deploy an IP Telephony solution between the Singapore Corporate Office and the Pokka Food Factory located about 1km apart. Leased line connectivity was not only cost-prohibitive, but required a lead time for installation that was unacceptable to Pokka. Broadband wireless solutions including FSO and wireless Ethernet bridges were a consideration; but the Non-Line-of-Sight nature of site locations made it extremely challenging for most solutions.

Technical Requirements

  • Minimum bandwidth of 4Mbps ( aggregate ) to support IP telephony and data applications.
  • Ease of installation and rapid deployment.
  • Carrier-grade reliability
  • Ability to operate in NLoS environments
  • Security
  • Low operational and maintenance costs

Deployment Details
An established Infocomm Network Solutions provider, NEC Solutions Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, looked to ROOTS Communications for a suitable wireless solution. In less than two weeks, the team surveyed, proposed, installed and commissioned the wireless system for Pokka. We installed the Motorola PTP 400 series radio on a 3m mast at the 5th storey rooftop of Pokka's Corporate Singapore Office. The other end of the radio was installed at the 2nd storey of the Pokka Food Factory. Although the sites were only 1km apart, obstruction from intermediate buildings and aluminum roof cladding made the deployment exceptionally challenging . Drawing heavily on the MIMO capability and best-in-class receiver sensitivity of the PTP 400 radios, the link was established in a matter of hours. Running at an achieved data rate of 17Mbps while transmitting at only 1 W EIRP , the performance of the PTP 400 far exceeded the expectations of Pokka.

The Results
Since the installation of the Motorola PTP 400 in September 2006, the link has been running reliably with no-down time and delivering about 17 Mbps aggregate bandwidth. The achieved stability and throughput is more than sufficient to carry the IP Telephony and LAN data between the two sites. Considering fast ROI and implementation expediency of the entire project, PTP 400 wireless solution is the obvious choice.

The great synergy working with ROOTS Communications is one important factor
that saw us through this timely and successful delivery, not to mention the team’s
commitment, the extensive knowledge and understanding of Customer’s requirements.

Senior Vice President of NEC Solutions Asia Pacific, Mr. Tan Boon Chin

The Motorola PTP 400 Lite provides a robust solution with carrier grade reliability.
It has exceeded our bandwidth expectation over such an extreme Non Line-of-Sight (NLoS)
environment. More importantly, it provides our company significant cost savings on our IT infrastructure.
