Western International School (WIS) is a private academic school located in the heart of Phnom Penh. The school opened in September of 2003 with the capacity for 600 students. The three-story building consists of 18 classrooms, a computer lab, a science lab, a cafeteria, a library for student research, and several offices for teachers and staff members.
The Objective And Challenge:
Extending wireless access to staff and students on different campuses
As part of its vision to provide leading educational facilities and infrastructure for its staff and students, WIS wanted to connect the five campuses and the director’s house, in an area that totals 15 sq km in Phnom Penh City.
To fully support the institute’s educational needs, the wireless network had to deliver video, data, and email across indoor and outdoor campus spaces, as well as support the institute’s very large user base of 1,000 that comprise students and faculty.
With six different locations to connect, WIS realised it needed enough bandwidth to sustain the campuses both now and into the future, as new applications and additional
campuses are added.
Technical Requirements
- Covers an area of 15 sq km with 6 different locations
- Intuitive installation and management features for quick deployment
- Carrier-grade reliability
- Ability to operate in NLoS environments
- Interference mitigation feature
- Security
Deployment Details
WIS decided to implement a secure, high-performing wireless solution from Motorola, deploying the Motorola Canopy AP with a Micro Cluster
Management Module (CMM ) at the main campus with the Canopy Subscriber Modules (SM ) installed at the other campuses and the director’s house, with the data centralised at the main campus.
WIS chose to work with Motorola, and did not consider other vendors, due to Motorola’s well-established presence.
“We have confidence in Motorola’s products, as it has a long history in Cambodia. Furthermore the Canopy solution fits into our budget,” said Mr. Te Song, Vice- Principal (Finance and Operation), WIS.
In all, three Motorola Canopy 5700AP Access Points were deployed at the main campus, along with five Motorola Canopy 5700SM Subscriber Modules at the satellite campuses and the director’s home, with deployment occurring in January 2010.
The Results
- Carrier-class service quality with wireless flexibility
Both WIS staff and students can now access the Internet and Active Directory wirelessly. In addition, the staff have access to the school database management software, and the school management can view CCT V surveillance footage over the wireless network, resulting in higher security levels.
- State-of-the-art facility
This inter-campus, high-speed wireless network has helped WIS realise its vision of offering best-in-class educational facilities.
- Higher performance and faster speeds
The use of the Motorola Canopy solutions effectively reduces latency by one-third (from approximately 20 ms to 5-7 ms)
- Easy to manage
Centralised control enabled the rapid and remote configuration of the entire network — the entire wireless solution was set up in a record time of one month.
“Motorola’s wireless LAN solutions have provided Western International School with reliable, end-to-end
coverage, security and manageability both indoors and outdoors. Motorola is
helping us realise our goal of providing information at the fingertips of our
teachers, and enriching the students’ learning experience ”
Mr. Pagna Young, Vice-Principal (Academic and Provost), WIS
